Renewed cult clashes have claimed six lives over the last two weeks in Edo State. For reasons that are unclear some rival cult groups went about hunting down perceived enemies and shattering what looked like a respite in cult war in the state. A 500 level computer science student of the state-owned Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Ekpoma, Osagie Osamudiamen , believed to be the leader of one of the cult groups in the institution was allegedly gunned down in a popular hotel within the University town. He was said to have been tricked into dislodging his aides who served as defence to him and lured to the hotel where he was shot to death at close range. Lagos state is currently training 80 women to drive commercial LAGBUS buses, popularly known as “BRT”. Mass transportation firm, LAGBUS Asset Management is conducting the training, Punch reports. The managing director of the company, Babatunde Disu , stated that the inclusion of women in the training program constituted a part of the state’s efforts to provide equal employment opportunities for females in Lagos.  General Manager of Fleet Operation for LAGBUS, Seyi Osiyemi opined thus “we will train them to drive a bus after which they will learnt how to drive the big bus. We have signed agreement with a driving training school to train them on how to drive a car and a small bus. Then they will get transferred to our own driving school where they will be trained on how to drive a bus,” #Mega city for all, Gender no more a hindrance!

When my employer relocated me from Abuja to Lagos, I didn’t see it as much of a big deal. After all I had spent my early childhood and teenage years in Lagos, visited at least once every year and still maintained a good number of friends in the city. I was pretty sure living in Lagos wouldn’t be much different from living in Abuja (asides for the traffic congestion.) Lagos and Abuja are the 2 most developed cities in Nigeria. Maybe Lagos is a little more advanced, because it’s the commercial capital, more populous and hence more market for businesses. But Abuja, being the Federal Capital Territory gets more Government attention. It’s a lot cleaner, has better roads and there are fewer Uniformed men to harass you on the roads. Asides from these inherent differences in the 2 cities, there’s a wide cultural gap which I think is part of why Lagos is often described as the “City of hustlers”. Conakry (Xinhua/NAN) – Guinea’s Justice Minister Cheick Sacko said 22 suspects had been arrested in connection with last week’s killing of eight government officials. The eight officials were involved in sensitization of the public against Ebola Virus Disease in the southeast region of Wome. “The suspected perpetrators of the assassinations will be charged before a special sitting of the Conakry Court of Appeal,” the minister said on Wednesday in Conakry. He said that those arrested included Labile Haba , a 30-year-old hawker, who was believed to be the head of the operation. Sacko said other suspects include two residents of Wome who had tried to flee to Cote d’Ivoire, as well as their two colleagues arrested in the town of Gueckedou in Guinea’s southern region. The justice minister said the suspects, who were arrested a day after the killing of the eight officials, had been questioned by investigators.

South Africa’s first gay-friendly mosque, called the “Open Mosque”  is sparking quite a bit of controversy. The mosque has been described as extremely liberal, allowing women to lead prayers, and showing tolerance for gay individuals. Authorities in Cape Town, where the mosque is located, are planning on shutting it down, BBC reports. Taj Hargey , the founder of the mosque, alleges that city council is trying to close the mosque by using “ridiculous” by-laws as an excuse. ” I will not be threatened by them or anyone else. We have freedom of religion and expression in this country. No-one has the right to tell anyone what to believe in. This is a gender equal mosque, autonomous and independent and will remain so,” he said. Former vice-president of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has formally declared his intention to run for the 2015 presidential elections. He will be contesting via the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform, Punch reports. Abubakar made the formal declaration yesterday, at a ceremony that took place at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. “Our country seems to be on auto pilot with no one in charge. Nigeria now more than ever before, needs a strong, dynamic, decisive, competent and visionary leadership that can halt the current drift of the ship of state. Corruption needs to be fought, jobs need to be created, our infrastructure needs to be rebuilt, social services need to be provided and insecurity needs to be tackled in a decisive, robust and multi-pronged way,” he said.

2014-09-18 16:29 Lagos - The Lagos State Government has described as illegal the addition of three more floors to the existing two-storey building of the collapsed guest house in the premises of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, (SCOAN), PM News reports.
